According to data released by the Bureau of Justice Statistics (2011), between 2003 and 2009 at least 4,813 people died in the process of being arrested by police, the majority being people of color. From Rodney King to Adam Trammell, police has been known for using excessive force in various occasions. For which is why, it is crucial for police officers to refugee training of some sort to avoid excessive force and the killing of an innocent. Adam Trammell, a young man suffering from schizophrenia, was unreasonably tased over fifteen times after failing to comply to orders, although he couldn’t fully understand due to his illness. As for Rodney King, we was beaten by police for no justifiable reason. Cases like those, amongst the several others that have occurred, are reasons for why police brutality must come to an end. How can this happen? By educating and training those who are part of law enforcement to treat with people that are are disabled and have special needs. They must learn how to distinguish different cases and different people in order to better serve us, their community. If we do not petition for better training and education for those in power, society will only worsen.
