The average high school student in the modern day has the same level of anxiety as the average psychiatric patient in the early 1950’s. A new study found that heavy homework load negatively impacts the lives of high school students resulting in excess stress, anxiety, physical and mental problems, as well as little or no time for leisure. For this reason, the reduction of homework in some cases is crucial for the health of the student. Harris Cooper, a professor of education and psychology at Duke University, says that no more than two hours of homework a night should be assigned to students in high school. Nevertheless, the average high school student had an average of 3 hours of homework a night.

The excess amount of homework that a high school student receives accounts for sleep deprivation, exhaustion and a lack of balance in their lives. The lack of balance being due to the students’ inability of having sufficient time for their personal lives, this including time with their friends and family. Several students affirm that they have no lives outside of school. The life of the average high school student revolves around school, they leave home to do schoolwork, they return home to do homework. The purpose of homework is to refine the skills learned in class, however, most students say that their homework is only “somewhat useful” in helping them learn the material and prepare for tests. Without a doubt, extreme homework loads are simply decreasing the student’s quality of life. However, it is important to acknowledge that the amount of homework one receives varies on several factors such as the community which the school is in, the core subject, and the teacher’s teaching style. Nonetheless, the student’s health must be prioritized in every case.

Homework is given in unreasonable amounts and must be cut down in order to promote a better education system. Regardless of the teacher’s teaching style and core subject, the student’s health is primordial. The only way to guarantee a healthy education system is to reduce the amount of homework given at school, allowing for the development of relationships and activities beyond school thus promoting mental, emotional, physical wellness.
