Recently signer Avril Lavigne, known for her early hits such as “Sk8er Boi” and “Complicated,” debunked the conspiracy stating that, not only is she alive, but she was never replaced with a look-alike double to distract paparazzi during her five-year hiatus away from the spotlight.

For a little background, the rumors of Lavigne’s death appeared after her grandfather died in 2003. The singer, who was reportedly very close to him, took his passing hard and led some conspiracy theorists to believe that she took her own life. Following Lavigne’s purported death, seeing that at the time she was at the peak of her fame, an Avril Lavigne double named Melissa was allegedly hired to distract the paparazzi.

The “evidence” that fans of the theory use to prove the switch include Lavigne’s change in style, handwriting and cryptic song lyrics that suggest her death. Some even believe that Melissa tries to reveal her true identity in the album Under My Skin.

Recently, Avril had an interview with Australia’s KISS 1065, where they asked, “Did you laugh at the rumors that went around where you no longer exist and there’s a clone of you?” To which Avril replied,

“Yeah, some people think that I’m not the real me, which is so weird! Like, why would they even think that?” She eventually put the rumors down to the fact that “people are just bored and need something to talk about”.

The station offers the conclusion that “Avril never actually flat out denied” the conspiracy theory and a few odd occurrences are described in the studio that took place in the moment Avril responded “…as soon as Jackie asked this question, the phone line turned really weird! Avril went a bit robotic, cut out and times, and even accidentally started pressing random buttons making a beep sound! Is it just a coincidence that things started going haywire with the line as soon as we asked about the Melissa theories? Or was someone doing it…”

Regardless, the description of the interview and Lavigne’s response to the question does come across a little strange. Is Avril actually Melissa? What do you think?
