A Step Toward Peace

by Saul Cardenas

North Korea. The most volatile nation on earth, ready to declare war at a moment’s notice made a stride toward peace on January 9, 2018. This stride consisted of diplomatic engagement with its counterpart, South Korea. The two nations engaged in discussions regarding military tension and other international issues. According to various sources, this engagement was a landmark step toward maintaining regional and international peace.

During the meeting, North Korean officials made various claims. One of the most striking was in regard to their nuclear arms. The meeting revealed that nuclear weapons were not aimed at China nor Russia but rather the United States, South Korea, and Japan. However, the South Korean diplomats proposed a unified move between the North and South to denuclearize the Korean Peninsula. While not accepting denuclearization, the North did agree to ban certain officials from nuclear tests in exchange for a lift in sanctions from the South.

To assure peace as a priority, North Korea pledged to send a large delegation to the Winter Olympics in Pyeongchang, South Korea later this year. The delegation will consist of athletes, government officials, reporters, a cheer team, and art performers.

After a year of nuclear tests and military tension, this is relieving news. If peace talks like this continue, there may be some solace in the age of weapons of mass destruction.l
