Volleyball: Vanessa Zavala
Vanessa Zavala, Junior, tried out for the volleyball her freshman year with zero volleyball skills, and made it to the Frosoph team and made the varsity team her sophomore year. Vanessa mentions, “Every single day I took the time to practice at home with just a volleyball and a wall. It was difficult but my mindset was to make varsity the incoming school year.” Her advice to girls looking into trying out for volleyball is, “A strong mindset, dedication, and practice can make anything possible.” Coach Coney says, “She is an excellent server, passer, hitter and blocker.”
Dorian Gutierrez, Sophomore, has been playing volleyball for two years now. He tried out his freshman year and made it to the varsity team and is still playing now as a sophomore. Dorian plays middle and outside hitte Dorian says, “I have constantly been working hard to be better, such as listening to the coach and giving 100% during practice.” His advice to the ones looking into trying out is to understand that volleyball takes dedication and commitment.
Soccer: Allan Zaldivar
Freshman, Allan Zaldivar has been playing soccer since he was 7 years old. He made the varsity team his first year of high school. The position he plays is attacking midfielder. Allan says, “I have worked hard and tried to improve my skills every day.” His advice to the ones looking into trying out is to practice before the try outs, and “Give it your all and don’t give up.” Coach Chavez says, “He lead the varsity team in scoring all season as a freshman.”
Junior, Sophia Valenzuela has been part of the soccer team throughout her three years in high school and will continue to do so, her senior year. Valenzuela is known to play last man. Sophia stated, “I had to overcome the obstacles put in my way, and not let negative thoughts get to me. To tell you the true success is never given it is earned on the field, with blood sweat, and sometimes even tears.”
Junior, David Mixon has been playing basketball for six years. He started playing in sixth grade, and has been playing on the varsity team for three years. He has been working hard to get better every day by constantly practicing and staying dedicated to the game. Mixon mentions, “To get better it takes a lot of time and effort, focus on bettering your weaknesses and improving your skills.” Mixon’s position on the team is point guard.
