Freak Show

By Albert Moran

Los Angeles is a very popular tourist destination. Many attractions and sights bring billions in revenue annually, and this is from tourism. Thousands of people visit places like Griffith Park, the Observatory, Downtown Los Angeles, Little Tokyo, and Venice Beach daily. However, one attraction at Venice Beach has gained national attention, the Venice Beach Freak Show.

Opened in 2006 by owner Todd Ray, the Venice Beach Freak Show became one of Venice’s most noticeable and memorable attractions. The freak show features live two headed animals, and many wonders, and magnificent sights, such as deformed animals, with extra limbs. It is followed by a live act packed with sword swallowing and the littlest lady in L.A. The freak show definitely has a fan base, especially since the famous AMC television series, Freak Show, where the lives and journeys of the Freak Show performers were broadcasted to the nation.

The Freak Show announced in late April, that they will be closing their doors. Plans to reopen its freak show are still unclear at the moment and no location has been given to its reopening; however, plans to reopen are very likely, the real question is where? The building which was once home to the Venice Beach Freak Show, is now home to the cafeteria for the new SnapChat headquarters. SnapChat has made many unhappy and generated a movement of people against SnapChat with signs posted on private residences stating “Evict SnapChat.” Sadly, the signs have had no impact thus far, but the movement has a strong following on social media.

Katherine Mary Knight

By Joel Garcia

Katherine Mary Knight Australia’s first woman to be sentenced to life without parole. She was with the murder of John Charles Thomas Price. She was born to an alcoholic and abusive father who raped her mother repeatedly up to 10 times a day. In high school, she became alienated from classmates because she was a bully who stood over the other kids. She assaulted at least one boy with a weapon and was once injured by a teacher acting in self-defense. At 16, without having learned to read or write, she was hired at her “dream job”, at the local slaughterhouse boning, which provided her with her own set of butcher knives, which she hung above her bed every night before she would go to sleep. Knight began a relationship with John Price under these circumstances.

A series of assaults on Price culminated with Knight stabbing Price in the chest. He kicked her out of his house, and took out a restraining order to keep her away from both him and his children. One night she visited Price’s house while he was sleeping and watched TV for a few minutes before waking Price and having sex with him after which he fell asleep. By the next morning she had decapitated him and cooked parts of his body, serving up the meat with vegetables and gravy at the dinner table, each plate having the name of one of Price’s children on it. Price’s head was found in a pot with vegetables.

Knight initially pleading not guilty, but on November 8th, 2001, Justice O’Keefe pointed out that the nature of the crime and needed a severe penalty. She was sentenced to life in prison with the addition sentence that she was “never to be released”. This is the first time in Australian history that a woman was sentenced to life imprisonment.

Most students stop playing sports following their senior year, but this will not be the case with SGHS Senior, Jamaal Neal. This upcoming fall he will be enrolling in the University of Las Vegas where he will be majoring in business with a focus on Apparel.

When asked what advise he has for underclassman he responded, “Take advantages of resources and opportunities offered. Watch what you post on social media, spend more time doing what you have to do rather than what you want to do.”

Jamaal was contacted by the university and recruited three hours later after they watched his highlights and accessed his transcripts. They offered him a full-ride scholarship. He was excited to have received this opportunity because it is not offered to many individuals. He admitted, “I was highly relieved and excited for the opportunity. I was not expecting it.”

Estela Felix, a senior at South Gate High School, will also be experiencing going out of state. Estela will be attending Green Mountain College – a private environmental liberal arts college located in Vermont, across the country from her home. Estela Felix was rewarded for excelling on and off the court, she won numerous awards such as Gro Harlem Brundtland Global Sust. Award of $4,000 every semester that she attends the school and GMC Authentic Sustainability 2020 Grant which gives Estela $9,500. She will be playing volleyball for the Eagles next fall, and is enthusiastic and hopeful for her future in the East Coast.

Recalling the excitement she felt receiving a prestigious scholarship for academics and sports “I was very excited, I knew that my hard work finally payed off and will continue to pay off at Green Mountain. I have always put academics first and will continue to after high school.”

Felix suggests that underclassmen put school first and sports second and to focus on and off the court because their hard work will be acknowledged when it is time for them to apply to universities.

El Corruptour

By Melissa Annet Vega

In Mexico City, tourists taking pictures of popular locations and historical landmarks is not an odd sight. A new tour, however, reimagined the idea of sightseeing into an educational and satirical attraction known as the Corruptour. The purpose of the tour is to inform citizens and tourists about the corruption occurring daily in Mexico and what they can do to stop it, all while poking fun at some of the most powerful and influential politicians in the country. Traveling through Mexico City, in a school bus with a sawed-off top, tourists are taken to visit 12 locations. At the capital building, for example, where they discuss occasions in which congressmen have bribed media to not put out specific information, participated in under the table deals with large corporations, and misappropriated government funds for the building which include new leather seats imported from Italy but no funding to install a ramp for people with disabilities. Another location they visit is the Antimonumento Ayotzinapa, a monument meant to honor the 43 students that disappeared from Guerrero and are believed to have been cheated out of a legitimate investigation that can deliver justice and closure to the families of the assumed deceased. The bus tour is funded by private and public donations. Volunteers oversee the trip that happens every Sunday and the ride is free.
