Kaepernick’s refusal to stand during the National Anthem is a silent form of protest in support of people of color who are being oppressed in the United States. Kaepernick claims the act is in defiance of police brutality. As an NFL player, Kaepernick has made the decision while fighting for his football life. He is currently the backup quarterback for the 49ers and his career in the NFL has been on a downward spiral for the past two years

Kaepernick is aware of what he is doing and he knows it does not sit well with a lot of people, including the 49ers. There are those who oppose Kaepernicks form of protest, and those who agree with it. “If they take football away, my endorsements from me, I know that I stood up for what is right.”

Every NFL football game begins with the National Anthem. Traditionally everyone stands out of respect for the American flag and our country. Recently that has changed due to San Francisco 49ers backup quarterback Colin Kaepernick has refused to stand for the playing of the National Anthem. Kaepernick was alone and originally went unnoticed during his first protest, it wasn’t until the third intense of protest that gained national attention. Since then, he has continued to protest with many other athletes in the NFL deciding to join him.
