Universal Studios: Halloween Horror Nights Overview

By Diana Ruiz

In comparison to many other well-known amusement parks like Knott’s Scary Farm, Six Flags Fright Fest, and Disneyland’s Halloween Time, Universal Studios also organizes an event for the holiday of Halloween every year called Halloween Horror Nights. It includes walk-though mazes, scare zones, live-shows, along with the standard rides and attractions.

Halloween Horror Nights has added new attractions this year. The seven new mazes based on horror television shows and films include: American-Horror Story, The Exorcist, Michael Myers Halloween-Hell Comes to Haddonfield, The Texas Chainsaw Massacre, Krampus, The Walking Dead (which is now an all year-round attraction), and the latest Freddy vs. Jason maze, based on the 2003 film. Visitors can also experience the all new Terror Tram by Eli Roth, as well as The Purge as this year’s scare zone throughout the park. After making their Halloween Horror Nights debut last year, the JABBAWOKEES, a world known dance crew is back with an all new show just for Halloween Horror Nights. After their sold-out shows in Las Vegas, it became the highest rated attraction at the park.

If you plan to purchase tickets Horror Nights, it’s best to purchase them early. The Day/Night combo ticket is the best deal. And don’t forget, Halloween Horror Nights is not recommended for children under 13, so don’t bring your younger siblings.

Halloween Horror Nights launched September 16th and will end on November 5th.

The Los Angeles Haunted Hayride is darker and more disturbing than ever. This year’s hayride is a totally new design that involves you choosing a path to. The path you choice will determine the type of experiences you will have. As your wagon moves you will encounter evil, power and more that will help you understand that Halloween doesn’t only consist of costumes and candy.

At one point you will be forced off the wagon and will encounter a dark maze in a reimaged colossally possessed demonic house reminiscent of the movie Ouija Origin of Evil. SGHS senior Nancy Lanuza states, “I’m very excited to attend with my friends on as long as we get a good deal on the tickets”. While you travel through the path and encounter different evils you will then be allowed to go door to door to trick or treat. On this “haunted hayride” you can step inside a murder scene, experience Death Row, carve a pumpkin at Jack’s Carving Shack, witness a fascinating light show, and even visit a psychic.

Theoretical dimensions and schizophrenia

By Juan Cocina

The medical definition of schizophrenia is, “A brain disorder in which people interpret reality abnormally.” In the most severe cases, patients may see or hear things that are not real. Other symptoms include, but are not limited to: a constant feeling of being watched, different ways of speaking and writing, and bizarre behavior. A theory in the field of theoretical physics, the string theory, offers a possible reason for these “abnormal” behaviors schizophrenics exhibit. The idea that our universe is like a bubble that exists among other bubbles or universes, and that they may come in contact at certain points. This means that schizophrenia patients could actually be a bridge to other universes.  Although it isn’t mathematically proven, let us look further into the idea of patients being the bridge to another dimension.

One symptom of schizophrenia is “hearing voices” and/or having multiple personalities. There are cases in which patients may have psychopathic voices that tell them to kill. But then they also have voices that are friendly and mean no harm. Therefore, it may be that there are actually two sets of beings talking to them, connecting to the schizophrenic from separate dimensions. Those who are diagnosed with schizophrenia never claim to have thought those thoughts; they always claim it was someone/something else telling them. Patients diagnosed with schizophrenia and multiple personality disorder may well have been partially taken over, or share parts of reality with a “twin” from another dimension.

There are multiple types of diagnoses under the term “schizophrenia,” but the treatment usually includes mental rehabilitation, with lots of antipsychotics and anti-tremor pills. Maybe, these treatments simply bring the person back to our version of reality; our dimension. But let me ask these last questions: If people believe in Heaven and Hell, why can’t there be other places too… And if these places all exist who is to say that schizophrenics are not, at least partially, there… Will it ever be possible to prove what they see is truly a mental delusion?

Russian Sleep Experiment

By Unknown

Have you ever wondered what happens if you don’t sleep? The simple thought of never having to sleep in itself is mind boggling. This is what drove Russian researchers to create a gas that would prevent the body from needing sleep. Along with the gas, they created a chamber to put five World War 2 prisoners. These chambers consisted of: microphones for monitoring, food, running water, books, areas for sleep, and a 5 inch thick porthole sized window to look through. To make sure they were alive and well, they also created a way to pump gas and oxygen, a way to monitor these gases, and a hidden speaker for communication. The prisoners, being promised freedom, were generally happy with the circumstances they were in. However, this was just a recipe for destruction.

This went south very quickly, as within four days, the subjects began to act a little strange. However, the doctors believed that they were an effect of the gas. Severe paranoia kicked in, as they started to whisper into the microphones instead of having normal conversations with their comrades. One subject began to scream at the top of his lungs for close to three hours straight; in the end you could only hear small squeaks. After more days passed, two other prisoners followed the first prisoner’s behavior. Additionally, the last two began to tear books apart and smeared their excrement’s onto the papers and covered the port hole. Then, everything went silent.

The doctors, now worried, started thinking about how to create a reaction in the chamber. They decided that they would open the door to check on the subjects. The doctors knew that they were alive, because oxygen usage was enough for 5 grown adults performing excessive amounts of exercise. So one doctor used the microphone on the outside to say, “We are opening the chamber to test the microphones; step away from the door and lie flat on the floor or you will be shot. Compliance will earn one of you your immediate freedom.” But as a response, they said that they no longer wanted to be freed. However that was not the end of it, the doctors then did open the door and sent a couple of soldiers in, only to be horribly frightened about what was right in front of them…

Upperclassmen Advice: Aryanna Sanchez

  By: Bryan Hernandez

Take it from someone who was among the top five students of her class Junior Year, a peer counselor who manages her time and does well academically while still being involved in extracurricular activities. SGHS Senior, Aryanna Sanchez, shares her advice on how she was able to reach the position she’s now in.

Aryanna recommends working extremely hard. Although it might be easy to slack off, procrastinate, and put things off until later, putting in those extra hours of studying and sacrificing certain things, such as going out with friends to the beach when you have a unit exam the following day, can go a long way far when trying to earn those A’s. Whether it’s re-reading chapters or going over notes and homework, you should definitely prepare yourself when an exam is coming up. Being the one with the highest grade on the exam will feel better than having your foot engulfed in seaweed.

Here’s a list of approved tips on passing classes and finals:

·        “Do Your Homework!”
– Homework reinforces what’s being taught in the classroom. If you didn’t have a chance to fully understand the lesson in class, homework allows you to practice it at your pace, strengthening your comprehension of the subject.

·        “Befriend the person who understands the curriculum better than yourself.”
– Develop a positive and productive friendship with those who can help you better your understanding. Feel free to ask that person any and all questions you may have on the subject, and be willing to help one another progress academically.

·        “Study groups are a must!”
– You might be the person who believes studying alone is the best possible way to pass an exam; however, taking part in a study group will expose you to different studying techniques from classmates who frequently perform well on tests. Study groups are essential for someone who wishes to ace their test and/or doesn’t quite know how to study effectively.

How to Play the Midnight Game

By Albert Moran

While there is a lot of speculation on if this game works, or if the midnight man is even real, many thrill seekers still play. There is really no solid evidence of the existence of the midnight ghoul, however, many people who played the game have said that playing the game was the worst decision of their lives.

The game first rose to popularity on the internet in the early 2010’s when creepy pastas overwhelmed the internet. This gave way to the creation of many mythical creatures, such as the slender man, or other games such as the elevator game. The game involves a player going around their dark house avoiding the midnight man at all costs. But be aware! Play at your own risk and avoid the midnight man at all costs!

Playing the game is very simple. Well first we must begin with the materials required to successfully complete the summoning of the Midnight Man. You must have a paper, pencil, sharp object, candle, salt, matches, and a WOODEN door. It is key that the door is wood, if not the ritual will not work. CAUTION! I highly encourage that you do not play this game under any circumstances! However, if you choose to ignore my warnings, follow these steps.

Step 1: Turn off every light source in your homes. Phones, televisions, even night lights! Everything off.

Step 2: Light a candle outside your WOODEN door.

Step 3: Write your name on a piece of paper, and use the sharp object to prick yourself, and place a small drop of blood beside your name.

Step 4: At 11:59, knock on your door 22 times, but make sure you knock 22 times before 12:00A.M. strikes.

Step 5: Once 12:00A.M. strikes, blow out the candle and enter your home. Close the door, and once you’re completely inside. Relight the candle. You have now successfully invited the Midnight Man into your home.

Step 6: Once the candle is relit, the game has begun. You must move throughout your house, and keep the candle on at all times! If the candle goes out, you have 10 seconds to relight it, if you fail to relight it in 10 seconds, surround yourself in a circle of salt until 3:33 A.M. At 3:33 A.M. the game is over and you are free to go. If you fail to surround yourself in a salt circle or keep your candle lit, the Midnight Man will get you!

Step 7: If you manage to keep the candle lit and/or successfully relight the candle, you continue wandering throughout the house until 3:33, then you have won the game and it is safe to turn the lights on. If you turn the lights on at any point during the game, the Midnight Man will take you with him, and you will never be seen again.

So never, at any point during the game, turn on the lights, allow the candle to be turned off, stay in one place, or stop playing until 3:33! Signs that the midnight man is near include you getting chilly, the candle going out, low whispers, and even seeing him. So again, I will advise you not to play, and do not attempt to play.

Possessed: The History of Demonic Possessions

By Joel Garcia

Demonic Possession: the belief that individuals can be possessed by evil beings, commonly referred to as demons or devils.

Beliefs in spirit possession have remained virtually unchanged since the beginning of civilization and still exist to this day. As long as demonic possessions have been claimed there have been exorcisms. Exorcisms include the use of prayers, commands, fumigations, holy water, hellebore, rue, salt, and roses.  In 2013, the Roman Catholic Church announced that they were training up a new “army “of exorcists to meet the growing demand for experts to rid people of evil spirits.  The Church claims that the rise in requests for exorcism comes from more people dabbling in the ‘dark arts’ with the help of information found on the internet.

The Catholic Church is not the only religious organization that conducts rites to rid a person of demonic possessions. Basically, every religion and culture worldwide has supported the idea of spirit possession and the need for some form of exorcism. In ancient Mesopotamia, it was believed that all forms of sickness came from powerful spirits entering a person’s body and attaching to a person’s body and soul. Ancient Babylonian priests performed rituals by destroying a clay or wax image of a demon.

In Christianity, there are many references to Jesus performing exorcisms, and the ability to cast our evil spirits was a sign of a true disciple. In the Hindu religion, the ancient texts known as the Vedas, which were composed around 1000 BC, refer to evil beings that interfere in the work of Hindu gods and harm the living.

Many scientists believe that so-called demonic possession is simply a form of mental illness, such as hysteria, mania, psychosis, Tourette’s syndrome, schizophrenia or personality disorder.  Sceptics claim that the illusion that exorcism works on people is really just the placebo effect, or put simply, a cure by strongly believing in something.

Beliefs in spirit possession have remained unchanged since the beginning of civilization and still exist to this day.  Whether possession by demonic forces is real or simply the result of psychological issues is still debated.
