South Gate’ Swim team is pretty unique. South Gate only has a boy’s swim team. In spite of this obstacle, there are some girls that have managed to demonstrate excellent performance and make it onto the team. One such swimmer is Genessy Landaverde. Genessy began swimming at a very young age with the Lynwood Aquatics Team. She swam with them throughout middle school and later joined our high school swim team.
Despite being one of the few girls on the boys swim team, Genessy has pushed herself to match and exceed the skill of many of the boys on the team. Through her perseverance and strong leadership skills, she has earned the title of co-captain. When she found out that she was selected to be co-captain she “was surprised and thought it was really cool.” As co-captain she makes sure “everyone works together as a team,” especially in water polo. Genessy feels at a bit of a disadvantage because the swim team is not as big as other school’s teams but she cherishes every victory. Her most memorable win against rival Garfield where the team celebrated by pushing their coach into the pool.
