South Gate’s basketball team is known for being very hard working and dedicated. James Gomez, captain and shooting guard for South Gate’s varsity basketball team, is a prime example of a dedicated student-athlete. From an early age, James’s interest in basketball began to develop, especially when he saw star players like Kobe Bryant play. This interest was made greater when he realized that a lot of his friends also played.
Now a senior, his passion remains and is evident in practice and games. James always makes sure to “congratulate our team and coaching staff for not being complacent and pushing each other to our limits.” He is self-driven but also finds plenty of motivation from his parents who “always motivate me to do better and play at my best.” James maintains performance at varsity level and also takes on rigorous courses including many AP classes.
James has really benefited from his experience as a basketball player because he has learned the importance of teamwork. In addition, he says “I’ve learned that everything is easier when done with people who cooperate and are looking to achieve the same goals.” Athletes, like James, take charge of the team and as a captain, he makes sure to demonstrate good sportsmanship. James says that joining the basketball team has been one of the best experiences of his life.
